"Pockets of poor care lets down the rest"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

I was in Carlton Coleby ward with asthma. I found the nursing and care staff to be incredibly dedicated and caring on the most part, their busy schedule being the main contributor to poor care I witnessed. Typically this would be forgetting requests so I had to ask for things multiple times. This made me feel like I bothered them too much, and if I was elderly I would feel very bad indeed. The ward has a large proportion of elderly, most of whom received good care, however simple stuff was missed such as adequate fluid levels and skin care.

The medical staff were all very good, however they need to communicate more about their decisions and involve patients more! I had my pain killers I was taking for many years just changed by some doctor on a whim with no consultation for example!

The ancillary staff and volunteers on the ward need a pat on the back! They were all friendly, kind and went the extra mile . Most of the nursing and care staff did too! Well done Carlton Coleby ward! And thank you for making me all better again xxxxxx

Dear Karen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your comments. Of course we welcome feedback when we get things right, but also constructive criticism, such as your own, which helps us to identify and focus on things that do not go so well.

Being busy is not an excuse for delivering poor care and I will make sure your comments are passed on to the team members. Equally, I am disappointed that you were not consulted with regard to the change in your medication. Again, this comment will be shared with the appropriate team members.

Finally, it is so nice that you recognised the contribution the housekeeping staff and volunteers make to the running of the ward. I will ensure your lovely comments are shared with them.

Thank you once again for your feedback, and I am pleased to hear you are feeling better.

Regards,

Ian Holdich, Charge Nurse, Carlton Coleby Ward
