"Ward 307"

About: Royal Derby Hospital

I, personally, was in Ward 307 for a Tuesday to Thursday stay about 2 years ago after having an operation on my parotid gland.

I found the staff helpful and pleasant.

Unfortunately two of my friends also had occasion to be in this ward during the following two years, I think the second one was there about 6-9 months ago.

Both these people complained about a nurse who was unpleasant to them.

The first patient had had an operation on her varicose veins, she was struggling to get out of bed to go to the loo, the nurse barked that she couldn't walk on the floor with nothing on her feet but made no effort to help her get shoes on, the lady struggled and burst open a cut on her knee, getting blood on the floor and sheets - the nurse's reaction was so say they weren't changing sheets at that time of night and left the 87 year old lady in that state.

The second patient had undergone a seven and a half hour operation, had a tracheotomy and when she tried to indicate that she needed to communicate by writing all the nurse could do was shout at her asking what it was she wanted to say - a bit difficult to speak with a tracheotomy.

This nurse, same ward, clearly needs to update their ideas, not to mention read the patients notes.

The sad thing is, of course, that people like them give the rest of the hospital a bad name which is very unfortunate as I can only say good things about the RDH from my experience.

Thank you for sharing both yours and your friends experience when admitted to Ward 307.

I was disappointed to hear that your friends both had a negative experience with a member of staff on the ward and I would like to take this opportunity to offer them both my apologies for any upset caused in respect of this matter.

I can confirm that we would be happy to look into both of these admissions, if this is something your friends would like to do.

The Patient Advice & Liaison Team (PALS) can be contacted via dhft.contactpals@nhs.net or by telephoning 0800 783 7691, quoting 29462.

Kind Regards, The PALS Team
