"Orthopedic suite still as fantastic as ever"

About: Pontefract General Infirmary

I had knee replacement surgery on 5th October 2015 at Pontefract., having had similar surgery to the other leg at Pontefract some 2 and a half years ago. The treatment and aftercare then was first class and my visit this time was as good ,if not better. For me this shows the level of care is consistent, putting patients first, and the unit is a real asset to the Mid Yorkshire Trust at a time when the Trust is under heavy scrutiny.

Once again, from the moment I arrived I was put at ease by the nursing staff. I was kept fully informed regarding the procedure, the ward was once again spotless and the staff were extremely friendly and supportive. The Surgeon was excellent in their manner and care, and the anesthetist was fantastic in their pre operative advice and indeed throughout the operation. Even during the journey to theatre I was made to feel very much at ease by the porter who chatted throughout.

Once back on the ward you can see how hard the nursing staff, supported by staff who provide food and clean the ward, really work. Pain control was administered swiftly and efficiently, all staff were very attentive, and the way the staff handled a difficult patient during the night who was complaining of extreme pain was excellent. They even called in to my cubicle to check if I had been disturbed and whether a temporary move to a single room would assist in my rest. First rate all round and very much a continuance of my experience last time.

This unit is a real credit to the trust and this should be rightly acknowledged.

All staff work tirelessly and efficiently, clearly putting patient needs first , whilst ensuring there is consistently the right balance between treatment, advice and humour, and it makes me very proud and gives me real confidence to see a unit in action like this, demonstrating we still have a primary health service to be very proud of.

Well done to all staff at the unit. When you are raced off your feet caring for patients in this manner, please take a moment to reflect....there are loads of patients out there for whom you consistently make a real difference. Your hard work and efforts may sometimes appear to go unnoticed, but this is not the case at all !. You have made a real difference to my quality of life over the last two years and for that I am forever grateful. Thanks you all so much for a first class service.
