"Nothing! I have mental health ..."

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

(as the patient),

What I liked

Nothing! I have mental health problems and am an alcoholic......I tried to help myself and stop drinking, however i suffered severe withdrawal symptoms and was taken to A&E by my partner. The triage nurse basicly asked what i wanted them to do about it!, i explained the severity of my withdrawal symptoms (which are extremely dangerous!) I was ushered out of the room and told to wait in the waiting area. I and the rest of the waiting room then heard the nurse ring the out of hours GP service and proceed to tell the Dr in a very condesending tone of voice, that she had a patient who was after diazapam!

What could be improved

The trust and staff bothering to look into the seriousness of alcohol withdrawal and maybe even follow the NSF regarding alcohol dependance/withdrawal as set out by the DoH, as i have since this dreadful experience.

The nurse in question was extremely judgemental and displayed no care or empathy towards me as a human being.........completely against her NMC requirements!

Anything else?

Services are in dire need regarding drug and alcohol services in Durham. If i had turned up at the QE in Gateshead with severe withdrawal symptoms i would have been admitted and given treatment, maybe even with a little dignity and respect.

I wish i knew then what i know now, i would have made an official complaint
