"Cancelling an appointment"

About: Newark Hospital

(as a relative),

I have LPA for my elderly father. He received a letter advising him of an appointment which he did not need to attend. The letter stated that if he wanted to cancel he should ring 03456088888. This I did on his behalf and I was told that I couldn't cancel unless I had a password. My father has no knowledge of any such password. What is the point of asking a 94 year old to ring a number if there is no way he can cancel the appointment?
