"Paediatric Medical and Nursing Care Above and Beyond The Call of Duty"

About: Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Our now 10 year old son was admitted to ward 20 at Wishaw General Hospital as he was very ill with Acute Glomerularnephritis which resulted in a 10 day hospital admission and over the past few years he has attended the Paediatric Outpatients Clinic at Wishaw General.

Fortunately our son's care was maintained at Wishaw General and this was due to excellent communication between the Medics in Wishaw General and the Renal Team at Yorkhill who liaised with each other on a daily basis in regards to his condition and The Paediatric Team at Wishaw provided his care under the direction of Yorkhill Renal Team.

We would like to bring to your attention how pleased we are at the excellent care our son and ourselves received during his hospital admission and follow up at Paediatrics out patients clinic. We feel that nowadays we do not express enough the good and positives in life but are quick to express the bad and negatives.

It has been a particularly difficult time for us and our little boy but all the team from Paediatricians to nursing staff made things a lot easier for us, their care, professionalism, knowledge and explanation has been second to none and made us very much at ease and comfortable to ask questions. Their people skills shone through.

Our brave son is precious to us and it thanks to them that he has made a full recovery and it was tears of joy on Friday when he was discharged from this outstanding team. His care was lead by Dr Thin Thin Saing, Dr Cunningham, Dr Heather Maxwell Renal Yorkhill, Victoria Causer Renal Nurse Specialist and Louise Dietetics.

What an excellent team! Keep up the good work.

Dear Thankful Parents of a 10 Year Old Boy

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback your experience of our paediatric service. It is really important to us that parents and children receive the highest possible standards of care and are provided with the necessary support during what is often a very difficult time. I am pleased that this was your experience and will be delighted to feedback to the staff involved in your son's care.

Susan

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

It was so lovely to read both your comments, and those from your wee boy (who definitely has a talent for writing!). It is fantastic to hear about how well these two teams worked together to give the best possible care to your son, as well as to both of you as his parents.

We all know that high standards of medical care are only one part of people's xperience in hospital...the other things you have highlighted - excellent people skills, ensuring people feel comfortable asking questions, making both patients and parents feel supported - are just as important in helping people get through such a difficult time. I'm so glad this was your experience, and I will be delighted to pass your comments on to Dr Maxwell and the wider Paediatrics team to let them know the difference they have made.

Thank you again for writing to us, and wishing all of you the very best,

Lorna
