"Pain and bruising after angiogram"

(as the patient),

I was led to believe my Angiogram was to be carried out by a consultant who visited me and introduced himself on his rounds meeting patients. Later another person visited me looked at my notes asked a few questions etc. about my past medical history, he may have introduced himself but don't remember his name.

Shortly after this a nurse came and took me to the Theatre room in which this Doctor was there. The nursing staff prepared me for the procedure that was about to take place ( which I had previously about 7 yrs. ago) and had no bad memories.

Unfortunately I cannot say the same about this one.

I had to call out when the needle was being put in my arm for him to stop as the pain was extreme. One of the nurses then gave me some medication through the feeder tube saying it would relax me. I can assure you I was perfectly relaxed going into the theatre it was the way the procedure was being carried out that made me call out. I felt whatever was going into my arm was going to come through my skin.

I feel if this new doctor who was working with me was a student in the learning process I should have been asked ( and may I say I would have agreed for it to be done) as trainees have to learn. On the removal of the band covering my wound I had to get a nurse as my arm became swollen at the wrist. It was attended to and eventually I was discharged.

I am writing this 3 days later and I have extensive bruising running from my wrist for about 7 inches up my inner arm. On the day after my angiogram I did go to my practice nurse who did give me reassurance there was no infection, but I do feel something went wrong to cause the extent of bruising I have.

May I say I have no complaints about nursing staff or any of the medical people who were there everyone was very friendly & appeared to do their job they made all the patients as comfortable as possible.
