"Staff are consistently brilliant"

About: Ayrshire Hospice

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My husband was diagnosed with MND recently. He suffers from a lot of pain during the night. We tried our best to manage it in the house but couldn't really. Our GP referred my husband to the hospice, and someone came out to assess him quickly. They talked about getting him in to look at pain relief and initially he was closed to the idea. He thought the hospice was a place to die. When his pain increased he asked if he could come in - and he was brought in quickly after that. My husband's condition means that he can be a bit panicky -the doctor explained everything that was going to be done, and his medications were reduced step by step. The doctors were very fastidious about any side effects etc. and there's been a big reduction in the number of tablets he is taking. His pain is much better. Coming here has been a very positive experience, everything that is done is for his benefit. Staff are consistently brilliant. I would say that more privacy with the toilet would be the only improvement that could be made, my husband is quite private that way.

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us of you and your husband's experience of Ayrshire Hospice. We know that people sometimes think the Hospice is a sad place where people come to die, however it can be a bright and happy place too. On occasions it does take people to feel very low before they will consider accessing our services. I am so pleased to hear that, having made the decision to come in to the Hospice, your husband's pain is under better control and that we have managed to reduce the number of medications he is taking.

I appreciate the feedback regarding the toilet facilities and will ensure that this is considered during service re-design.

With warm wishes,

Susan Campbell
