"Good and bad at Wishaw General hospital"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as the patient),

I had a procedure to treat a pilonidal synus in Wishaw General at the end of August 2015. I attended the day surgery unit and the staff there were friendly and helpful. I had previously met my surgeon who had already explained everything to me. I had the procedure and was discharged later in the day. Unfortunately as time went on I developed an infection which the doctor prescribed an anti biotic for. I was still on a lot of discomfort and asked for an earlier return appointment however found the doctors secretary very unhelpful. I tried to arrange an early return appointment for advice however the doctor was on holiday which of course was no problem however their secretary told me that she would speak with his colleague. After continually phoning and leaving messages I got no reply. I eventually got hold of the secretary on the phone and was told their colleague had been ignoring their pages and that the doctor would be back in a week so the secretary would make an appointment with the doctor which the secretary did however this did not help me in the meantime. I seen the doctor on their return and they advised the pain may be due to a problem under the skin and he would request an ultrasound scan. It has been 3 weeks since the referral was made and despite phone calls to chase this up I still haven't received an appointment. I have been off work for almost 8 weeks now and the wound isn't healed. I'm under increasing pressure from my employer to return but can't until I know what is causing the pain.

Dear Piloman

I am pleased to hear your surgery went well and sorry to hear that you have developed an infection and that you are still in a lot of discomfort.

Please accept my sincere apologies for our poor communication with you and for our delay in getting you an appointment this is not the standard of communication and service I would expect.

I am sorry you are getting pressure from your employer over the time you have lost at work if you could please contact Yvonne Ross our Patient Affairs Manager with your details by calling 01698366558 she will investigate why you have been waiting 3 weeks on an ultrasound scan.

I would encourage you to contact us as quickly as possible to resolve this matter for you once again please accept my sincere apologies for any delays you have incurred.

Best Wishes

Marion

Update posted by Piloman (the patient)

Hi Marion

Thanks for your speedy reply. I received an appointment for my scan a few days after writing this review and have been in touch with Yvonne's department who are looking into me getting an appointment for follow up with my surgeon. Hopefully this can be arranged soon given the overall length of time things have been going on

Update posted by Piloman (the patient)

Had my scan and had to speak to Yvonne's department again who contacted the relevant department who I'm afraid again was very unhelpful and was told to tell me that the surgeon will write to me when my ultrasound results have been looked at. It's been two weeks since the scan and I was told the result by the doctor doing the scan. I feel there's no communication and that I need a return appointment to see the surgeon as I'm still getting a lot of pain.
