"No-one came to ask if I was okay"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I have been in the observation ward a few times over the past few years. Every experience has been the same. Nurses sit at the desk chatting and gossiping and if you ask for help or assistance their body language and manner is shocking.

A couple of weeks ago I was back in and nothing had changed. No-one came to ask if I was ok or needed anything. I had asked for bowls because I was going to be sick. On a few occasion I was violently coughing and vomiting. On one occasion a nurse came in and put more bowls on the bed, and walked out. Later on I was being very sick again. I know they could hear me as I could hear them chatting.

There was more than one nurse on duty yet not of them came to see if I was alright. No-one at any point, after being there for hours, came to take the vomit bowls away. The nurses were getting sandwiches out of the fridge for themselves, and drinks. Not one patient was asked if they wanted anything. I have walked out of this ward on a number of occasions because of the way I have been treated. Many people I know have done the same.

If these people do not want to do their job they should leave and give it to someone who cares. On a previous visit a patients was talking to me when he had a panic attack. I asked the nurses for assistance and they were not impressed. I had to go out for a cigarette because I was so angry at their attitude and lack of care towards this man. Upon returning I was told that this was a hospital and not a social event. I was told that the man and I were to stay in our own rooms.

Dear human being

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience which was not good to read.I am sure that when this is passed on the staff will be saddened by your account. It would be helpful if you could specify the area concerned as it is not absolutely clear and I am keen to get this to the right people. If you would like to discuss your experience further, this too is an option which I would be happy to follow up in conversation with you if you would be willing.

I am sorry your experience was so poor, this is definitely not what we want for people coming into hospital.

If you wold like to discuss further please call me on 01592 648069

Regards

Louise Ewing
