"Communication and administration problems"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

We waited months and heard nothing from ENT.

We then took our 2yr old for his operation to have his umbilical hernia removed.

However they didn't operate because they didn't know about his sleep Apnea.

SO I phoned ENT and they said they did not know why but his "Sleep clinic" referral record simply said removed, not triaged. So we had him put back on the list for the sleep clinic.

It seems to me the administration and communication is appalling and no doubt a lot of other people are suffering too.

It seems to me that you are best to take things into your own hands and follow up yourself. I think I should start asking for health records and carry them with me to medical appointments because they don't seem to be able to access or maintain a single source of truth i feel.

Dear loveAiden

At the outset please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your post from last month. NHS Lothian like all Health Boards in Scotland aim to provide patients with an outpatient appointment within 12 weeks of referral. At present the Paediatric ENT Service has a considerable backlog of patients which means we are unable to offer patients an appointment within the required timescales. All efforts are being made to reduce the size of the waiting list and get patients treated within a reasonable timeframe.

Please accept our apologies for any delayed wait your son experienced and the mix-up with the sleep clinic. Please also accept our apologies for the subsequent cancellation of your son’s operation. In order to investigate this issue more thoroughly Tim Cameron, Assistant Service Manager, Children's Services would be happy to look into this for your and his contact details are (Tel: 0131 536 0029).

Kind regards

Jeannette Morrison
