"Compassionate care"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital

My 91yr old mum was admitted from Macclesfield hospital under the care of the vascular team. She as admitted to F 6. She had vascular and respiratory problems.

As a registered nurse

I feel I am in a good position to review the service not only as a daughter but as a health care professional with 40 years experience in secondary and primary care.

This review is really about my experience as mum sadly passed away. But I think the values of the straff and the ethos of the building are reflected in the care we received and for that I am very grateful.

The things I value the most about my experience at Wythenshawe hospital

I was offered the opportunity to stay on the grounds as I live 100 miles away.

When sorting out my accommodation the secuirty staff where patient and friendly, which is appreciatred when the situation is a bit overwhelming.

When I phoned to make enquires I was put though promptly and didn't hang on for ages or go round in circles.

When I phoned the ward I spoke to either the Dr or nurse dealing with my mum

When walking along the corridors, sometimes at night when the building was quiet, staff that passed by were friendly and smiled. Mostly the support staff/porters

I was offered a cup of tea on the ward, small but kind gestures

When mum deteriorated she was given a side room which offered her and the family privacy.

The drs had open discussions about mums care with both her when she was able and the family when she was not and I always felt that they had her best interests at heart and they were not just going though the motions. My thanks to Mr Ghosh and his team for trying hard when there was a chance of a positive outcome and being kind and compassionate when difficult decision had to be made.

My biggest gratitude goes to the nurses and healthcare workers who cared for mum day and night during her 4 day stay. They were kind, professional and caring and came promptly to mum when asked. They were always there but not intrusive and were sensitive to my needs also.

The ward may appear as little dated in places but what really matters in the end is the care and how the staff deliver it. The way mum was looked after made an unbearable situation bearable and for that I am very grateful to the staff of wards F 6 and Wythenshawe Hospital
