"Really impersonal"

About: Royal Derby Hospital

We are expecting our first baby in March and had our first scan booked in for 26th August. This is probably one of the most exciting times for an expectant couple but the sonographer really ruined the experience for us so I felt I had to give feedback.

We were called in to the scan room and the sonographer who was doing our scan told me to lie down on the bench. The sonographer didn't say anything else to me or acknowledge my husband. I lay down and was told to get my stomach out, which I did. The sonographer then put the gel on as expected and got straight to it. The sonographer spun the screen round and said "there's your baby now if you don't mind I'll carry on" and then pulled the screen back round and stared at it, clicking away for 5-7 minutes which is a long time in silence with nothing being explained to you. I tried to see the screen but the sonographer barked at me to put my head down so I lay there waiting for them to finish. The sonographer then spun the screen round and said "Ok, there's its head, heart, arm, leg etc, do you want a picture?" I said yes and they printed one off and gave it to me, then said "Ok can you wait outside for your blood test" I was a bit confused by the whole situation as nothing was explained and I kind of felt like the sonographer was bored with doing scans over and over again.

I stood up and asked if everything was ok with the baby and is the heart rate ok to which the sonographer replied in a rather patronising tone "Well there is one??" As if I was asking the most stupidest question. I came out feeling quite deflated when I should have been on top of the world. I saw on their badge that this was a senior sonographer as well which was shocking. I understand that they have to do the same thing day in day out but a bit of explanation would have gone a long way as we have never done this before. We then went in for the blood test and the phlebotomist taking my blood couldn't have been more of an opposite, and asked if it was our first or second, showed "Dad" where to sit, explained what they were taking the blood for and even explained a bit about the scan after I told said that the sonographer hadn't said a word to us. The member of staff taking my blood was lovely and even told us where to get good discounts on baby stuff which was really nice! I understand they are there to do a job but having a baby is such a special time and I understand that not everyone is chatty but we would have appreciated an explanation as to what the sonographer was looking for.
