"Complete waste of time"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a parent/guardian),

Very reluctantly asked my gp for a referral to CAMHS, for my child, who was being bullied at school to the extent they were refusing to go and mentioned suicide.

This resulted in a meeting with us both, where initial information my child gave was misconstrued. Additionally there were two subsequent meetings and a long wait for my child to be observed by the speech and language therapist.

I had went to CAMHS hoping to gain further tools for my child to deal with the bullying and also give my child more self confidence. I also hoped to ascertain if there was any other communication issues with peers.

Firstly I was shocked and angered at the dismissal letter as not once did it take into account the reason i asked for the referral or make any mention of it! Secondly i felt they had not fully taken the initial information i relayed to them into account. If anything, they made my child out to be an individual that they are quite clearly not. Very disconcerting. The help i was expecting was not offered.

Ultimately i felt the information i relayed was somewhat ignored and at times felt the speech and language therapist condescending. I was a health professional at one time and i am now sorry that i ever asked for a referral. A complete waste of both my time and theirs. Their skewed opinion is now on my child's medical records. Most of all i feel totally betrayed and let down. Very upsetting.

What could be improved? More holistic assimilation of details given and recording correct details

The lead staff member was caring.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear KITTY16,

I am really sorry that your child's experience of CAMHS has left you feeling let down and without the support that you expected. I know that this will be a worrying time for you and so it would be good to look into this in more detail to understand what has already been done and whether there is more, or alternative, support that could help.

I would appreciate if you could get in touch with me directly on lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk to share some of your child's personal details that I can pass on to my colleagues in CAMHS. I've already shared your story with the head of this service so he is aware of the issues you have highlighted and is keen to help.

I hope to hear from you soon,

Best Wishes,

Lorna
