"Wonderful, caring staff."

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

Last Wednesday my mother was taken to A/E in a dreadful condition. The staff were fantastic and pulled her through the first hour with a struggle. She was transferred to D40 where she had further assessments and her condition was grave, all the medical staff were honest, kind and caring and she was able at that time to voice her own preferences which were accepted and understood, special thanks to the nurse for all their kindness. Later she was transferred to E51 and settled into the ward, greeted by name and the nurse gave their name to mum and ourselves. While on the ward everyone from consultant to Outreach team to nurses and HCAs did everything in their power to try to give her an opportunity to make a recovery. She had her birthday on the ward on Saturday, 19/09/15. The staff got her a black forest gateau and it was shared round, she thoroughly enjoyed the piece she had. Sadly that was the high spot, after that she deteriorated and it was as we were expecting but not really ready for.

She passed away last evening. It was dignified, quiet and pain free, special thanks to all the staff on duty. I was with my mum from 2.30 Tuesday am until her passing at 7pm that day. The ward made me welcome and kept me supplied with coffee, offered a meal and allowed my colleagues to call in when the rest of my family was away. I could not have asked for better care for my mum. I truly feel this showed Sunderland Royal Hospitals best features, fantastic, professional and very caring staff.

Thank you!
