"Pregnancy, labour and birth"

I heard about one to one midwives through a friend. They offered appointments at home and you had the same midwife right the way through your pregnancy and for six weeks after birth. I get nervous in clinical settings and don't find it easy to see different health professionals every time so I was sold.

I knew they were experts in home births but I hadn't really considered that option. My sisters baby was unexpectedly sick when he was born and he was lucky there was a crash team on hand at the hospital to save his life.

As the pregnancy went on though, I read about home births and talked about it with the midwife, I realised how anxious I was in hospitals and thought about how nervous I'd be if I was surrounded by people I didn't know. I decided that being at home with my midwife Jo would probably make for a much smoother and safer delivery. I decided that I'd try it.

The care I received through my pregnancy was amazing. I had so much time to talk about everything. The care during the labour and delivery was even better. To have someone you know and trust talk you through every contraction, always by your side, giving you hugs and never more than a call away was fantastic.

I don't remember a lot of the labour, but I do remember a huge sense of calm when I was delivering my baby boy.

The aftercare was incredible too. Jo was only ever a phone all away and helped me through some tough days when I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to mother my baby well enough. The breastfeeding support was exceptional. I've breastfed my son exclusively for almost six months now and have really enjoyed it. A strong start was a huge part of that.

I can't recommend the service highly enough and I think every woman and child deserves the same level of care.
