About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

My father spent the majority of the last 5 months as a patient in the hospital. In terms of the nursing care he received on the ward, I am generally pleased. On the whole, the nurses, particularly the auxiliaries, were kind, friendly and attentive to my dad's needs. In terms of his medical care I however feel that the hospital is too big and specialists have too many patients to care for at once, therefore limiting the amount of time and attention they can commit to any one patient. Dad's notes were not read by the specialist until we expressed our concerns at his treatment and I feel that enough was not done to try to solve his problems and find an effective treatment. Sadly my father eventually passed away from an unrelated condition, but one which had been showing clear symptoms for over a week, yet by the time any investigations were done, it was too late to save him and he had spent many days in pain with little being done to alleviate it.

What could be improved

Communication between doctors and patients and doctors and family.

A better sense of urgency with regards to treatments and finding the cause of problems, particularly when symptoms are showing themselves and patients are in pain.
