"Would like to do more exercise"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Centre Castleview Day Care

(as a service user),

I can’t get out of my house unless someone helps me. I have nerve damage in one arm and don’t have the strength to lift my walking frame over the door. I get out to RVS lunch clubs twice a week and Castleview day centre once each week. I like getting a home cooked meal.

RVS is £4. 50 each day including transport, I’m going to see about going one more day. The food is made on the premises which is good; at Castleview you don’t always get what you expect.

I like the company at Castleview, if I wasn’t coming I would be at home watching TV. It can get monotonous at times, a lot of people have physical limitations so the activities we can do is limited. They are also short staffed at the moment so can only do one activity at a time instead of two.

I would like to be able to do more exercise. I used to go to Invigor8 exercise class at Auchenharvie, it was a good solid hour of exercise, it was great. I haven’t been able to go since my husband died as I don’t have transport.

I also went to the falls program at the Douglas Grant centre last year. It was a whole day of activity, it was very helpful. I would jump at the chance to go back there. It is supposed to be a 6 week program but I went for 12 or 13 weeks as they didn’t want to discharge me until something else was set up. Castleview day centre has replaced this but only 10 minutes of exercise here barely counts as exercise. I feel my legs are weakening without exercise.

I would also really like to be able to go for a walk.

There are exercise classes I could go to in the community but transport is a problem. I have tried My Bus but they will not lift my walker down the 3 stairs outside my house.

Dear keepfit,

I read your post carefully and I thought there are a few things here. it is good to hear that you found the falls programme at the Douglas Grant Rehab unit so helpful. It is great that you want to get out and about and do more exercise but it is such a shame you have 3 steps that you struggle with. I wonder if that can be changed. Do you have a Physiotherapist or Occupational therapist I wonder? If you do not, your GP or District Nurse should be able to put you in touch with someone who could possibly reassess your house accessibility.

I did contact Linda Gold, the ‘My bus’ Customer Support Officer and had a chat with her. She told me that the policy for ‘my bus’ is that the bus service is ‘pavement to pavement’ but occasionally the drivers go the extra mile out if the goodness of their heart. She would be happy to contact you to discuss it with you if you would like. If you do want to contact me and give me a phone number so you can be contacted by her, you can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222. Is there a neighbour or someone who could come to help you get out the house on the days you need to use ‘My bus’?

I will pass this to the appropriate teams for their consideration. Thank you for contacting us and letting us know about your dilemma and your hope to get more exercise, I do hope getting out can be made a bit easier for you.

Take care,

Eunice

Dear keepfit,

Many thanks for taking the time to get in touch with us about the services that you receive when you attend Castleview Day Centre.

I note the comments that Eunice has made about some of the other services and I would happily arrange for one of my colleagues to speak with you to see if we can help you get more out of the time you spend at Castleview and to see what other options may be open via social services?

You can get me on 0129431022 or by email on tfisher@north-ayrshire.gcsx.gov.uk

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Anthony Fisher
