"Not very good security"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Maternity

(as a relative),

For security you have to buzz to gain entry and say who you are visiting. Without exception while there for 15 minutes I saw 10 people buzz the staff on the intercom could not understand what was being said as English was poor so after asking to repeat (and it seemed to me they still didn't understand them) they were just let in. The same people were just walking in when someone came out. Not very good security for newborns

Dear Durdlledpor

Thank you for your post regarding security at Heartlands Hospital Princess of Wales Maternity Unit.

Please be assured that the security of all our newborns in our trust is protected at all times as every baby is tagged in our security system.

Should a baby be moved without unauthorisation from it's allocated ward, the security system is triggered and the whole unit is locked down, until it has been cleared by security and senior nursing staff. All babies in the Neonatal Unit are also tagged and the same happens should for any reason they are removed from the designated area.

I do hope that the above advice goes some way to reassure you as to the safety of our newborns and thank you for highlighting this matter.

Should you wish to discuss this further please contact the Patient Services Team on 0121 424 0808 or by email: patientservices@heartofengland.nhs.uk

Best wishes

Marie Helebert
