"My 5 week old grandson was taken ..."

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

(as the patient),

What could be improved

My 5 week old grandson was taken by his parents to A and E because he had had a temperature and a very different cry from normal at 9pm on a Saturday night. There was no proioritising despite the fact that he was so young. After nearly 4 hours they saw a Houseman who clearly was overworked and inexperienced who said he did not have a temperature. After another 3 hours they were told they could go to the children's ward but it would be as long again to wait before he could be looked at. These are new young parents. At no time were they helped about feeding/changing a very distressed baby. They decided to go home where their baby could be more comfortable. They were told this would go down on the notes as against medical advice - they never received ANY medical advice.

Anything else?

His parents visited the maternal grandparents in Blackburn the next day and took their son to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where he was seen immediately because there they DO give priority to such young babies. He has suspected meningitis. What more can I say?
