"Within an hour of being admitted ..."

About: York Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Within an hour of being admitted to Ward 13 I had a doctor examining me and was taken down for x-rays. After being moved later that day to the Medical Elective Suite I found the nurses for the first two days there to be very friendly and spent a lot of time with each of the eight patients making sure we were all comfortable. MES was very clean and the nurses used Alcohol rub at all times which was reassuring considering six wards had been closed due to an infection outbreak,

What could be improved

Communication between doctors and nurses. It took a very long time for the doctors to get in touch with nurses over what medications to give to patients. Whilst I appreciate the stressful job such people have, it was hours before any strong pain relief was given when one was in severe amounts of pain. Also the drugs trolley was left unattended for long periods of time which worried me significantly.

Anything else?

I was very traumatised when I suffered a severe adverse reaction to an anti-emetic nurses had given me twice. I had to wait seven hours for a doctor to come and see and examine me during which I was almost paralysed and in extreme pain. Yet this doctor still decided to discharge me saying it was simply anxiety! I was still paralysed in the Discharge lounge at but nonetheless was told to go home. I feel very angry about this as it took a doctor from Selby Out-of-hours, late that evening, to diagnose me with OGC and prescribe me tablets to control my symptoms. The attitude of the (different) nurses that last day I was in hospital made me feel I was kicking up a fuss about nothing and I was angry that when I was clearly in pain and struggling to walk they told me it was all in my head before saying how lovely the weather was!
