"critical care unit set the standard ..."

About: York Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

critical care unit set the standard by which i would like to see the whole hospital run

What could be improved

basic care plans followed and adequate staffing for vulnerable people who are often left to fend for themselves for basics such as a decent meal,a daily bath or shower and a bit of tlc

Anything else?

my dad has been in yh for several weeks now and remains undiagnosed.he went in as a typically active physically fit and independent bloke and has become and unkempt, dirty, rapidly aged, very confused and disoriented slob who has now contracted mrsa to add to his problems. It is the basic care that is missing here as well as the cleanliness shortfalls.we witnessed a doc leaning on the floor with gloved hands as they attempted to take blood from my dad.also numerous staff members fail to use hand gel or wash hands between patients etc.also the attitude towards confused and disoriented patients is all wrong.i had to object on several occasions to staff either speaking to my dad as though he fully understood what they were saying,or worse speaking to him as though he were a child or an idiot.

test results have been woefully slow in returning and we are not updated unless we specifically ask questions.

one crucial set of results were given to us by a doc who went on to say that the wrong type of eeg had been performed and therefore apologised and said another eeg had to be performed.

next day they confessed that those results were in fact belonging to another patient and my dads hadnt returned as yet.

on the plus side the nurses do a thankless task on the wards in general, trying to juggle paperwork and practical work under immensely difficult circumstances.

Good thing for me i am very organised and have kept a daily diary since my dad went in which catalogues events and makes for a fascinating read.

lets hope he gets a diagnosis today !!
