"Hopefully going to now find cause of back pain"

About: London Ambulance Service NHS Trust St Helier Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I had received epidural injections from the pain management clinic a few days earlier but on this particular day my back was particularly painful and was going into spasm when I tried to stand up. My legs were also giving way so it was very difficult to move.

I’m not sure which number I called, I think it was the emergency contact at the pain clinic who took my details and sent a paramedic to my house. The paramedic took further details and gave me some pain relief and must have also called for an ambulance. I was not fully aware of what was happening because of the pain. The ambulance crew gave me oxygen mixed with something else to also alleviate the pain and then took me to St Helliers hospital.

I was in the assessment ward for a few days where they scanned and x-rayed my back and have identified a problem which has resulted in an appointment with a specialist in a couple of weeks. This is positive news as I have suffered from lower back pain for a long time but the cause has not been identified, although I suspected it may have something to do with an injury to my upper back a few years ago. Whilst it was unfortunate I experienced such severe pain and was subsequently hospitalized I feel hopeful that the specialist will be able to help treat the cause.
