I recently came to have my blood done for diabetes.

I took my ticket and waited to be called.

Once called i was asked to sit in a chair where the person just took my name, no DOB check. I do have a slight needle phobia and even though i told them this they did nothing to reassure me.

They used what looked like a much used tourniquet and afterwards put a piece of cotton wool on the hole. Its a good job i only have a slight allergy to cotton wool and not a severe one.

I know this may seem trivial to you but when queried i was ignored.

I too work for the NHS and i know that we are no longer allowed to use the tourniquets that they used we have to use single patient ones, I also know that the use of cotton wool will cease soon as the minute fibres may adhere to the puncture site.

I am disappointed that your DOB wasn't checked as this is policy for DCHS phlebotomist, and that no reassurance offered to you,

I will speak to all DCHS phlebotomists at the next staff meeting to make them aware of this posting, and to ensure policies and procedures are followed.

Tourniquet’s are replaced when worn or if soiled, and to date there has been no national guidance not to continue with the use of cotton wool.
