"Leighton hospital cardiol wards from the..."

About: Leighton Hospital

Strengths - good food choices served hot, friendly attentive and very busy staff, comfortable variable geometry beds, day-room with TV and outdoor garden for fresh air and sunlight, knowledgeable experts and consultants. Personal telemetry for continuous heart monitoring working well. Frequent daily cleaning staff in evidence. Follow-up outpatient treatment well organised and efficient.

Weakness - Toilet paper is far too narrow at about 70 mm compared with the normal domestic width of 110 mm. It may be cheaper per metre but one has to use at least twice the length to avoid contaminating one's hands with e coli etc. It was very irritating having to practice origami in order to fulfil an essential need. I guess the NHS Buying Department must have bought a job lot of bus ticket rolls off a bankrupt bus company.

Hopefully surgeons, operating theatre staff, kitchen staff and nurses do not have to put up with this indignity. This is no laughing matter. If I was doing a risk analysis I would immediately identify the "bus ticket" toilet paper as a major hazard in the fight against contamination and infection in all departments. No doubt other hospitals in the land have similar penny-wise but pound foolish toilet paper, and similar disgruntled users reeling off yards of paper when 18 inches should suffice.

We have actually ordered the standard 100mm width toilet paper, we have not changed our order and it has not been part of a cost reduction exercise, but you are quite correct, having now surveyed areas of the site, the width of the toilet roll has reduced to 83mm.

Our Supplies colleagues are currently investigating what has happened with the supplier, either they have run out of the wider paper and so have sent us through a batch of the narrower paper or they have reduced the width of this particular commodity and not told us.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, as I say, we are following it up.

Mike Babb Divisional Director of Estates and Facilities

Thank you for your supportive comments about the clinical and nursing care you received, plus your feedback about the food and the environment. These are much appreciated and have been shared with the staff. I hope your recovery is progressing well.

Regards

Loraine Cornes, Matron.
