"Exercises would be a good benefit at Morris Court"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Centre Hanover Care at Home / Housing Support Service - Dalry

(as a service user),

I left my own home two years ago and moved to Morris Court. I didn’t want to leave my own home but now I feel lucky to be where I am. There is always a member of staff on the premises so that makes me feel safe. A support worker is always on duty. If something goes wrong then immediate action is taken. I don’t think there could be anywhere better for me to live.

The carers come in the morning and at night. The carers help people at mealtimes that can’t eat by themselves and they take food up to people that can’t come to the dining area. It’s a good service, the girls are nice but it can be a bit rushed. It would benefit from more staff.

There is a communal area but it doesn’t get used much. I think it would be a good idea to have some exercise sessions for the residents in this area. I went to a six week falls prevention program at the Douglas Grant centre and found it really helpful. My doctor referred me as I was at risk of falling. I did a lot of physio exercises, I worked really hard and it really built my strength. We were also given nutritional information from nurses. At Morris Court I see lots of people dragging their feet when they walk and really bent over their walking frames, looking quite unsafe. I think there could be good benefit from exercises.

The Morris Court Very Sheltered Development provides a Housing Support and Care service tailored to people’s individual needs. Each person has a housing support and care plan which reflects their individually assessed needs and also evidences the supports which are provided by the team. We are disappointed to hear that it is felt that the service is ‘rushed’ as the service has appropriate staffing levels at all times. Although we appreciate that exercise sessions are something that the person thinks would be beneficial for the resident group the development is however a Very Sheltered Housing development and these kinds of activities are not provided within the care and support packages provided by Hanover. We would gladly work with individuals through their care and support plans to see if we could access exercise classes from an appropriate provider from within the community but this would not be provided by Hanover within their defined housing support or care tasks. Going forward we will continue to consult individuals and the resident group further and endeavour to offer up activities which reflect the level of support which can be reasonably expected and which are most popular with the resident group.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear mrrs1,

I am so glad that your move has been a good one and that you found the falls prevention programme helpful. I will pass this post to the Douglas Grant rehab team for them to share.

I am sure you are right about the exercise so I do hope that more could be available for you. I am sorry that I can't help with this, is something Morris Court will have to look into.

Best wishes,

Eunice
