"Care or care less"

My son is currently a patient in here.

Having came in voluntarily on acknowledging he needed help as severely depressed.

On arrival here for admission, my son, his partner & I (along with his baby daughter of 10mths) were showed into a locked room and left waiting for a very long time - bearing in Mind all these circumstances I feel this is totally unacceptable.

From here a Dr came to talk/assess my son - who could hardly speak good clear English, at the time my son was finding it really difficult to communicate how he was feeling and this Dr expected him to be able to talk to get - when even me & his partner could barely understand them, they had no information/history on him, so it did not start off well.

From here he had to put up with patients setting off fire alarms, defecating on the floor, women walking round in the nude and other extreme behaviour. Whilst we appreciate the fact that these patients were ill, my son being depressed needed sleep, peace & quiet, medical care and counselling.

Yes he received medication and sleeping tablets to get him back into a sleep pattern,

No to some rest, peace & quiet and No to counselling, but has so far been interrogated by a Consultant who we have put in a complaint about to PALS, again whose English is poor, is rude and aggressive and my son did not feel he could speak with them.

At a session with him (his partner was present) this Cons was very aggressive and intimidating towards my son, who was having great difficulty communicating how he felt, other than to his partner, as a "Professional" in thus field, I would have thought, patience, understanding and a gentler approach was more in keeping to help my son talk?

Although we entirely agreed & so did my son, that he was not ready to leave and needed help and was getting some help I.e. medication, this Cons did a lot of harm, hence the complaint.

Another Cons saw my son Tues and he was able to talk to them and be listened to instead of just being threatened with being kept in/sectioned if he did not agree!

He is still in today, with an assessment set up today to see this aggressive Cons, so I am keeping a close eye in what he says/how he handles this meeting.

At the end if the day, if my son is now stable, on medication, acknowledging & seeking/getting help, it is a known fact and staff nurse s at the hospital concurrent that this type of illness has better results/chance of full recovery with support in place at home and on getting home quickly as the environment alone us not conduisive to patients of this type, yet alone this Cons!

Some staff here are very caring & supportive, but they also admit/agree/complain that it is not the right environment for patients of this type and that because of other patients conditions, do not have the time/resources to spend much time with my son.

Only by close contact, visiting my son & hospital staff have we felt we have been able to care for him fully!
