What I liked
NOT A LOT. My 2 year old daughter had a fall down some steps resulting in a large cut to her head. The ambulance service were top notch and were fantastic with my daughter. However when we arrived at the hospital this all fell apart. The "team" at the hospital were poor at best with one particular nurse that should not be allowed in contact with children ever having absolutely no empathy with a child whatsoever.
3 and a half hours wait is NOT acceptable to treat a 2 year old. Then to be told we would have to take her to Huddersfield the day after because they could not treat her there was just ridiculous. After some heated debate she was finally treated at Halifax. The team that finally helped stitch her head were fantastic though.
What could be improved
Training for the some of the Nurses (you know who you are) a two year old will not happily accept a stranger walking up to thme grabbing their chin, forcing their mouth open and squirting a syringe full of fluid down their throat and it is totally unacceptable to then turn to their Father and say well you do it then! She had happily accepted pain killers administered with a syringe into her mouth from 2 of your colleagues who actually had some empathy with her. Also a little comunication between teams would be a good idea. The triage nurse said it was fine to give her a dring then we were told later that she should not have had anything as this stopped her being treated.
And alsosince when was it policy to see someone who "had been in a fight 2 nights before and had a bit of a stiff neck" before a 2 year old child?
Anything else?
A poor service all round to be honest. With the exeption of the team that finally treated my daughter an atmosphere of couldn't care less pervades the accident and emergency dept.
Oh and it was swealteringly hot in there too.
