"Surgery in NHS Western Isles and Glasgow Royal Infirmary"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary Western Isles Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I underwent surgery in NHS Western Isles for a biopsy on a suspect lump in my abdomen. The care I received from the staff in Surgical was exceptional they did everything in their power to put me at ease whilst waiting to go into surgery. They ensured that I was discharged as soon as it was clinically safe to do so as they knew I was keen to be cared for at home.

The biopsy result showed that I had a rare sarcoma and my care was transferred to a multi Disciplinary Team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I underwent surgery and was taken care of in the burns unit. The staff stood out in the way that they not only cared for me but also in the open and friendly manner they showed to my family and kept them fully informed throughout my stay.

The ward itself was always cheerful, one of the highlights was being provided with jugs of iced water four times a day which kept my hydrated and helped my recovery as I had to make myself walk backwards and forwards to the toilet.

The team was truly multi disciplinary with Physiotherapists situated on the ward who were able to help with my breathing post operation and the pain team who visited throughout my stay to adjust my medication on a regular basis and ensure that I was comfortable.

Since my stays in hospital my follow up care both within the Western Isles and Glasgow has been exceptionally good with my care being shared so that I dont have to travel so frequently to the mainland for follow up appointments.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Pepperpot,

Thank you for taking the time to send me your feedback on your recent experience at Glasgow Royal Infirmary - it is fantastic to see that at every stage during this journey you have had that you have been well taken care of and that this continues with the two teams working together to make things as easy as possible for you.

I know that the team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary will be really touched at your kind comments, and you have demonstrated so clearly that they have created an efficient, joined-up approach to patient care, whilst being warm, friendly and really making patients (and their loved ones) feel taken care of.

I wish you well with the rest of your treatment, and thank you again for getting in touch.

Kind Regards,

Lorna

Dear Pepperpot

I would like to thank you very much for your feedback expressing your appreciation of the care and attention that you received from all staff within the Burns Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

It is always most gratifying for staff to receive letters from patients or relatives and it's good to know that their efforts are recognised; I will share your posting with all staff.

On behalf of the staff and myself I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to express your sentiments and wish you well in your recovery.
