"Consultants bedside manner"

About: Leighton Hospital

after being admitted for a procedure and having a severe phobia of needles and incompency of very junior staff in insisting several times and being used as a pincushion to obtain blood unsuccessful . The registrar was called and was very nasty to me in front of other patients telling me that if I didn't allow tjuniot staff to attempt even more blood my procedure would be cancelled!

When I got to theatre was concerned that a elderly man asked me exactly what I was having done and what my symptoms were.

When I came round no idea what the surgeon had found.

No one knew what had gone on.

Not very comforting

I am sorry to hear you had such a poor experience when you attended at the Treatment Centre. Usually provision can be made for patients who are needle phobic to have their blood taken by an extremely competent practitioner and it would appear this did not happen on your visit. Every member of staff who came into contact with you on this day should have introduced themselves to you.

This was obviously not the case when you entered the theatre and I will discuss this with the staff in that area. I am concerned that you are unaware of what the surgeon did during your surgery and what he had found. The usual procedure would be that patients are given a discharge letter containing all this information when they leave the hospital and a copy of this letter is sent electronically to the patient’s GP when they are discharged. If this was not the case can I suggest that you contact the Consultant’s secretary and ask that a copy be forwarded to you. We endeavour to make every patient’s visit the best experience that it can be and again I apologise that this was not the case in your experience. If I can be of any further help, please do not hesitate to contact me via the Customer Care Team on 01270 612378. Nikki Rafferty, Matron
