"mental health at the gilbert bain"

About: Gilbert Bain Hospital / Accident & emergency Gilbert Bain Hospital / Ward 3 (medical)

(as the patient),

as someone who suffers from mental health issues, I have been in the gilbert bain hospital before with suicide attempts ... after speaking to the psychiatrist we made a plan that if I felt suicidal, instead of acting on it I would get myself to A&E ... the only time I did this I was greeted with the words 'you havent tried to kill yourself tonight though so why are you here? ' this left me feeling even worse, like I was just wasting everyones time, I didnt want to kill myself but I didnt want to live anymore either, all I wanted was to feel safe, but that didnt happen.

I dont know about nurses training, but I think they should be trained in basic mental health (again I dont know if they are or not) but the nurses I met in A&E had no clue how to deal with mental health. I felt like I was treated like a child by everyone, I remember one nurse calling me stupid and selfish and that I should grow up and start being an adult.

I cant say this about all the staff in the hospital though, when I was admitted to ward 3 for treatment for a suicide attempt everyone was lovely, they didnt judge, they kept me distracted from my thoughts and spoke to me like I was a normal person and I genuinely felt like they cared. I know there were not mental health nurses, but they could of been, they were brilliant and they knew how to deal with mentally ill people. I would give them an award if I could.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience and care in the A&E Department and on Ward 3 at the Gilbert Bain Hospital.

Our nurses in the A&E Department and the wards are not trained mental health nurses, but we do provide lots of training for staff to support patients who come to hospital who have mental health conditions. I want to apologise that you left A&E feeling that you were not treated with respect or well cared for. I will discuss your feedback with the Senior Charge Nurse in A&E who is a champion for mental health service improvement as well as the manager of this service.

We will also make sure that staff on ward 3 get your positive feedback.

If you wanted to get in touch to give me more specific details about your stay in hospital and admission through A&E then please email me at kcarolan@nhs.net or ring me on 01595 743060
