"Good Maternity Services"

About: Watford General Hospital

During my time at WGH I used Midwife Triage, delivery suite, recovery and Katherine ward.

Triage which was quite understaffed at the time. Considering I was in active labour and a lot of pain I was left waiting for some time and not much privacy (out in the corridor).. On transfer to the Delivery Suite the person who stayed with me didn't seem to know much. I wasn't offered any pain relief and had to desperately ask for it. The person inserted a cannula into my hand and my husband and I have never seen such a bad job done with so much blood lost on the floor. This member of staff also failed to notice my waters had broken. Once the midwife in charge arrived they were great and took control of events. I felt in much safer hands at this point. The two doctors involved were good, although I was in immense pain they kept the situation moving and did what they thought was best for my baby and I. After the birth my suturing was attempted but I was taken to theatre for higher pain relief. The staff were good but I did feel I wasn't told what was going on. It was very frightening to be in theatre for more than twice the amount of time I was told I would be in there without my husband or baby. On transfer to recovery the staff here were wonderful - in particular one member of staff who was so kind in dealing with my uncomfortableness and keeping my spirits high. They cared for my baby and I so well, I cannot thank them enough for their time with me and my baby.

When in Katherine Ward my care was fine. The bay I was put in still had a few bits of litter from the last person which wasn't good. The staff monitored me and baby regularly, however being woken in the only hour of sleep I got that night wasn't great. One member of staff was particularly lovely, keeping me going through the night and they were the best at inserting canulas! Wasn't best impressed with the final bit of my discharge as it seemed there had been miscommunication of some of my results and I was made to feel responsible for their mistake. Overall a good experience with a couple of wonderful and not so wonderful staff along the way.
