My son went into hospital last Wednesday for a small operation. I would like to say thank you to the staff for working so hard to make the morning a success. (My son has Asperger's Syndrome and an earlier attempt at this operation elsewhere had failed due to his anxiety). Groundwork had been done before the day by my son's GP. The GP also forwarded an email of my son's worries to the surgeon which they had ready in front of them during an appointment a few weeks before and went through step by step. Before the operation, staff were happy to let him wait in a cubicle (rather than in the waiting area) and sorted out sedatives - I think these made the difference! Everyone was kind to him and I was told where to wait for him and how long he would be in theatre for. The operation took longer than anticipated and I was grateful to the surgeon for coming to see me afterwards to explain what had happened and that all would be well. The nurses in recovery were very helpful also with information about pain relief. The only confusion was in the car parking. We were advised to pay for a day (£7.50) and were given a sheet to fill in to claim the majority of that figure back but it was unclear how that happens. I should have sorted it out on the day but it was not really convenient. Although a minor operation compared with most, it is such a relief for my son and all of my family that it was completed. He is physically so much more comfortable now, is off almost a year's worth of (intermittent) antibiotics and spent this afternoon playing table tennis!
