If there are no spaces in your local unit, you just have to be prepared to go further afield. We are based in Lincolnshire, but my son has been at a unit in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, also a unit in Bury, Manchester and a unit in Sheffield. Sometimes it is more important to get them in some where, to keep them safe.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about your experiences regarding your son’s care, Ash Villa aim to provide inpatient care to young people as close to their home as possible, however, at this moment, we do not have any Psychiatric Intensive Care Units or specialist Eating Disorder beds in the region. This is something that NHS England are hoping to rectify through a procurement process which will look to address this issue.

Ash Villa are aware of all young people who are placed out of area and monitor their presentation in order that when a bed does become available in Ash Villa the young person can be repatriated, when clinically appropriate. Ash Villa employ a liaison nurse who maintains contact with units outside of Lincolnshire to ensure that Ash Villa have a good understanding of the progress of young people admitted out of area. This role ensures good links between the multi-disciplinary team at Ash Villa and units outside Lincolnshire.

Does this procurement involve a private mental hospital providing care for the NHS. My son and I have had a very poor experience of this type of hospital.

From my experience of private hospitals, the quality of staff is much poorer than NHS hospitals. The money spent on patient activities is very little compared to NHS hospitals. The types of therapy are limited eg mainly group DBT performed by support staff, not much CBT, which requires more qualified staff.

I can only assume this is to keep costs low and make as much profit out of the NHS as possible.
