"A very mixed experience"

My wife gave birth in the Whitt in July 2015 - it was a complicated delivery which at times wasn't helped by the standard of care provided. We waited for a whole day on Murrary Ward due to there being no space on the labour ward. During this time, supervision by miwifes was minimal despite my partner being in considerable pain due to complications with induction. We had to ask for PRN analgesia several times and we received conflicting advice re. use of diamorphine. There was a long delay in foetal monitoring which, when it finally happened, showed that the baby was in distress and we were finally rushed to the labour ward. Once there, two ST doctors made a total of 8 attempts at Epidural insertion - eventually the midwife all but demanded that they contact the on-call consultant who luckily was able to insert the catheter first time. The care in theatres was mixed - clinical elements good, concerns for dignity and psychological wellbeing less so. Midwife care throughout pregnancy was very good, as was community care. And despite some of the concerns raised in other reviews, experience on postnatal ward was good. Midwifes throughout labour mixed - some lacking in people skills, others absolutely excellent. So it seems it's the luck of the draw. If you have a long labour, you're likely to experience varying standards of care.
