"After my mother fractured her hip."

About: Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

I am writing this on behalf of my mother, who is less useful with computers than even I am.

After her recent fracture to her hip, she was placed in Ward 17 at Ninewells Hospital, but moved to Ward 27 due to lack of space. To be honest, this was probably the best thing to happen to my mother because, although ward 17 staff were fine, the staff in 27 were so attentive to her and able to spend more time with her. They were so caring, and humorous.

She was told it was a plastic surgery ward, and she wondered what work she was going to be getting done! The staff here are really to be commended, each and every one. She says it's the most comfortable stay she has ever had in a hospital, and she has been an inpatient a number of occasions!

One niggle she had though, was getting out of bed at 6 o'clock some mornings. She says there was one staff member who came in earlier than other staff in the morning and was rather standoffish with her on occasion; who would get her out of bed for breakfast approximately 2 hours before they arrived. (Surely there must be a regulation about getting patients out of bed? ) She said the same staff member could be quite brash and unapproachable, and my mother preferred asking other staff members for assistance as she felt rushed with her.

She hasn't let this experience spoil her stay. She wanted to say a very well earned thank you to everyone for such a wonderful job.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Patient Opinion. I was sorry to hear that your mother had fractured her hip but pleased to hear that she had a comfortable stay in Ward 27, Ninewells Hospital. Our staff do work hard to ensure that patients receive the best care experience possible and positive feedback is always welcome. I will certainly ensure that your mother's comments and thanks are passed on to them.

I note your mother’s one “niggle” about getting out of bed at 6 o’clock and sometimes feeling rushed. I apologise for this early start and will share this feedback for learning.

I hope your mother is progressing well with her recovery.

Kind regards.

Alison Moss
