"Darce Ward - poor communication"

About: Lister Hospital

I was admitted to Dacre Ward last Thursday for overnight monitoring after initially going to Triage with contractions with baby no.2. At Dacre Ward I had a number of different Staff coming into the cubicle to take observations etc and it was disappointing that hardly any of them introduced themselves or what their role was. This would've helped me to understand who was assigned to me as my widwife if indeed they are specifically assigned to a patient. It would have been helpful if introductions were made when there are shift changes. The only person to introduce themself was the consultant on Friday, they were very good and thorough and talked me through my options which I really appreciated. Also when observations were taken eg temperature, checking baby movements and blood pressure the technician never commented on of they were ok or not. Being heavily pregnant it is a stressful time so any updates are welcome and can help put the patient at ease. Furthermore there was a real lack of communication from the hospital staff with regards to when I would see the consultant, if there was an update on my Urine tests - I didn't learn until the following day that there had been some concerns with the initial test I had submitted in triage till it was mentioned to me on day 2. I felt I had to chase up things once I was informed and that's quite poor. Information should be communicated to the patient in a timely manner to ensure they don't feel like they have just been forgotten. I completely appreciate that they may have some cases which were a priority but due to the lack of communication I felt frustrated and I was already distressed about my situation. I was given a jug of water when I first arrived at the ward and I had to ask for fresh water on Friday morning. The midwife explained that patients/visitors can help themselves to the kitchen which was good to know but again if the housekeeping Information could be provided when patient first arrives then that would help. My husband could have got fresh water/tea etc without bothering the staff who will be busy. I'm happy to discuss the above if needed I just feel that some of the basics you would expect to be in place were missing during my stay and wouldn't want other patients to feel disappointed as I did.

First of all, please accept our apologies for your recent experience on Dacre ward at the Lister last week. We think there is a great deal that our head of midwifery would like to discuss to you. If you wouldn't mind doing so, please would you email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that we put you in touch with her?
