"smoking ban"

About: Western General Hospital (Edinburgh)

(as a relative),

Whilst visiting my pregnant daughter who is undergoing treatment for bladder cancer at the Western General hospital yesterday, myself and my daughter's partner were disgusted to find two benches full of people, one who was clearly a patient, smoking outside the entrance of the hospital, despite the very obvious no smoking signs. This is disrespectful to others, both patients and visitors and it is also disrespectful to the rules and regulations of the hospital. These people should be ashamed of themselves, but clearly they don't give a hoot about anyone but themselves. They are disgusting creatures and they make me sick. I think the hospital should be employing wardens to control the grounds to try and stop this.

A similar thing happened 3 weeks ago at St John's Hospital in Livingston when a man actually had the audacity to ask me for a light. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The treatment my daughter received was good.

Dear Western,

I was sorry to read of your experiences whilst visiting your daughter at the Western General Hospital and was pleased to hear that she has received good care.

NHS Lothian fully supports the smoke-free policy across all of its sites but does appreciate that it might be difficult for some patients and their families whilst in hospital. We are directing resources to support direct patient care. Staff are being asked to remind people as they see them to stop smoking on the hospital grounds.

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.
