"My daughters infusion experience"

About: Princess Royal Hospital (Haywards Heath)

my daughter has been having Infliximab infusions on Ansty ward for some time with great success but we have now been transferred to Newick ward which has been a total failure I'm afraid. We had an appointment there for 10am last Friday for which, due to traffic, we were late for. Doing the right thing we rang every number we could find to no avail, simply couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. When we arrived it was quite apparent that the nurse on the ward had been drafted in to help but had no interest in the patients. We sat there for more than 3 hours before we were told that the infusions for that day had been cancelled due to lack of staff. Absolutely appalling quite frankly. A member of staff from the rheumatology team rang me later to apologise and rearrange for today. So today we arrived at 11 am as requested only to find that the Orthopaedic Doctor had such shaky hands that they couldn't canalise my daughter who has had 16 eye operations in 2 years with no problems and reduced her to tears. Finally a lovely anaethetistic team appeared and got a line in straight away so the infusion could go ahead finally. Arrived before 11am, left after 5pm for a 2 hour infusion, disgusting. Daughter covered in bruises and traumatised after the doctor tried 3 times to canulate her and left her covered in blood. The nurses on the ward seemed to have no idea what was expected of them and blood was left on the floor! Another patient had her 1 hour infusion dripped into her in 10 minutes which sparked a major panic and caused a nurse to cry and the patient to have an urgent ECG. The whole unit is a shambles and it isn't the nurses fault! Cannot believe that this is the NHS that I pay good money for, the staff are great, the pressure that they are under and the lack of training is unacceptable. My daughter is now refusing to go back to the unit as it was so shambolic but thank God that the amazing Rheumatology nurse arrived to reassure us all. What is the PRH doing? I don't have words to describe what we've been through this last few days, my daughter is so traumatised that I think trying to get her to your hospital again will be very difficult.
