"Don't give up on them"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary

My auntie is in DRI ward 27 at the minute, she is extremely sick and we have been informed she will probably not be with us much longer. Some of the nurses have been so lovely and kind to her but a couple really need to learn better bedside manners. She may be old but she isn't stupid or mean, so please give her some courtesy. This is includes us, her family, we are by her side from morning till night and are saving the nurses a lot of work by doing most things for her ourselves. I have found her unattended a couple of times now with her lunch left opened up to go cold or stale. I had to ask about a check on her catheter as it kept leaking and 24 hours later they realised it was blocked. She now has a urine infection and we are very anxious about it being checked on regularly to ensure there isn't another blockage. My mum keeps being told 'if she doesn't respond to the meds we are giving her soon' we will stop giving them and put her in a side room to be more comfortable. I'm assuming that means for her to pass away too then? Also, what time span is, 'soon?! A day, 3 days, a week? Things need explaining more as families don't always think to ask for precise details at times like this as they are overcome with sorrow. When the question does arise the doctor isn't there anymore. Today I was giving my aunt some ice cream and willing her to eat more than a spoonful as she hasn't eaten for 4 days nearly. It wasn't appreciated when a nurse we have never seen before tells me to stop as she is choking and they want to sit her up some more. Choking! Really? As if I would try to feed her if she was choking, I was fuming. The nurse didn't even acknowledge me after they had spoken and jyst stood waiting for me to move out of the way for my aunt to be repositioned. Manners cost nothing! As I suspected and dreaded, when I tried to continue to get her to eat some more she refused and that was her dinner finished! If I am ever spoken to or treated with such rudeness again I won't hold my tongue and I will take it higher. There is just no need, none of the families need any more stress than they are already dealing with on that ward so just remember to treat them and the patients with more respect!
