my husband was taken to the L&D following a stroke. The care he received was excellent From admission, to discharge a few days later. Within minutes of admission to A&E he was seen by a specialist nurse from the stroke unit who stayed with him during a speedy CT scan so that they could administer a clot busting drug if required. He was given medication to prevent further damage from clots and then seen quickly in A &E by a stroke unit doctor who discussed results of CT and what would happen next. Within a short time my husband was admitted to the stroke unit where the care was really good. Both he and I were kept informed of his condition and planned scans and treatment. The stroke unit staff at all levels worked as a very efficient and effective team. My husband had a clear plan of investigation and treatment which was followed and because he was on the urgent MRI scan list he was regularly updated. Within 3days he had had all the necessary scans and tests, he had seen physiotherapists and other specialists in aftercare. Almost immediately the doctors received the MRI results they came and explained the results to us and invited us to their office to see and explain the scan, after which my husband was allowed home with aftercare instructions. The staff in the stroke unit worked so diligently on behalf of the patients and were so kind and caring despite some very challenging behaviour by some poor patients badly affected by stroke. The unit appeared well staffed during the day and I witnessed nurses showing kindness and compassion to patients who were very unwell, regularly checking on them, asking if they needed anything and giving ongoing reassurance, something sadly lacking in my experience with another hospital. Thank you so much to those involved in my husbands care, to the ambulance and A &E team, but especially to the stroke unit you have restored our trust in the NHS.
