"Hip Replacement care lacking"

About: Spire Southampton Hospital

Medically the Spire is well placed and can offer a good standard of care. The hotel services were very good , food, service. The accommodation was lacking for temperature control, the room was excessively hot with lack of shade and no air condtioning. I was not overly impressed with the standard of nursing care; some of the more experienced senior nurses were excellent in both knowledge, care and confidence however I do feel that some staff were barely coping with their job, were either overworked or simply inexperienced. There was a lack of consistent care quality with the nursing staff changing during a shift. I was not consulted enough about post operative care regime and was often left pondering about what was going on. I was particularly displeased by the discharge procedure whereby I was not offered sufficient time or explanation of what was going on. It seemed that an early check out was simply preferred to clear a bed. My post op physio plan was not forth coming, I was discharged without compression socks, or sufficient care concerning leg swelling. It might be quite normal to those who see it day in day out but I see it once or so in a lifetime. Leg swelling was not controlled well. Overall I would be doubtful about recommending this hospital and would not chose it again.
