"The staff - consultants, doctors, ..."

About: Russells Hall Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The staff - consultants, doctors, all nursing and auxiliary staff, porters, were generally very caring and considerate despite the considerable pressures on their time.

In order to try and help me as soon as possible, scans Xrays etc were arranged as quickly as possible - again despite considerable demands on time.

What could be improved

More fresh air, though I understand that it is difficult to accomodate such a range of ages and illnesses. And/or more fans.

Disposable wipes in the bathrooms for toilet seats would be helpful for staff, sick and not so sick people.

Back ache seems to be a common 'side effect' of hospital beds - as hot water bottles are not allowed, perhaps some kind of warm gel packs.

I was surprised at the amount of salt, butter and white sugar with the meals and not much fresh fruit (perhaps cost)

Anything else?

I'm afraid I still don't like the building and the lack of windows except in the corridors.

Consequently natural daylight and views are often limited and I've always thought they were quite important in recovery.

However I can see the argument for having expensive facilities and equipment all on one site.

Thank you for your positive comments about your medical staff and for the points you have raised. Please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 073 0510 who will be happy to look into your concerns.

We are sorry you were not completely satisfied with the food you received during your stay at Russells Hall. We try to offer our patients a variety of foods that are nutritionally balanced and appetizing. Our menus are continually reviewed by the catering department and dieticians to provide the best food possible to our patients.

With regard to your comments regarding the building, we are pleased to say that following the recent refurbishment and redevelopment of the hospital, the buildings now meet the highest standards and requirements for modern health care. Unfortunately, due to the depth and size of the building, it was not possible to incorporate windows to outside in every room, however, in addition to the corridors you mention and many other patient areas, all of the Inpatient wards which are mainly divided into 4 bedded bays and single ensuite rooms have windows to outside.
