"wheelchairs"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

My only bug bear is the lack of wheelchairs available and the resigned attitude of some staff to assist you in getting hold of one. I think someone should take responsibility and round up those abandoned that I actually notice on occasions when I do not need one. My husband can be attending the hospital vjrtually on a weekly basis at the Phoenix Unit and outpatient appointments. I have been sent on a wild goose chase to to collect one from one end of the building to the other. I have been told if there is not one under the stairs then they are unable to help. A receptionist sent a volunteer out with a chair to collect my husband from the car park who complained all the time and said i should have dropped my husband off at the entrance. I needed to grab the first available disabled bay and could not leave my husband unattended for fear of him falling unwell or falling down. The whole situation just adds to the stress that we are already going through. Fortunately due to the kindness of the receptionist on the help desk i was informed of the Red Cross service and was able to acquire wheelchair on loan which I was unaware of. We do have a mobility scooter at home but it totally impracticable to fit in the confined spaces of the clinics and the unit unfortunately.
