"Ridiculous outpatient appointment waiting time"

About: Southmead Hospital

Today I had an 11am appointment booked at Gate 12 Clinic A to see the doctor... I was not seen until 2pm. What is happening here? A three hour wait is totally unacceptable I was not at all happy with the outcome, the doctor was clearly tired, stressed and probably hungry and did not seem to be interested in how the pain was affecting my lifestyle. All that became evident was that the doctor was calculating cost and duration of the prosthesis and it does look as though the doctor is under pressure for budgetary reasons. Which I understand. Clearly the doctor is not responsible for their clinic being over subscribed but it is not fair on them or us, the patients. Listening to those around me, X-ray also caused part of the problem so perhaps it is down to organisation or lack of. This needs sorting!

Dear Anonymous – I am sorry that you had such a poor experience at the Orthopaedics Clinic Southmead Hospital. Regrettably the clinic also sees emergency patients and of course the number who attend can be difficult to predict, although we do use seasonal information to try and determine possible attendees and staff accordingly. As you observe this can also put pressure on the x-ray department. As you can see by the comments posted by nwalmsley on the 1st June 2015 the clinic often runs without any delay. I regret this was not your experience however. Please rest assured the Trust continues to work to improve patients experience and reduce waiting times wherever possible. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
