"Outpatient appointment cancelled after waiting 50..."

I had an outpatients appointment for a urology clinic, the first time I had visited the hospital for some years, after waiting 50 minutes I was told the clinic was cancelled that day and given no explanation why this had happened. I work and it is hard to get time off at short notice, was told I would be seen tomorrow and that I would be contacted. I understand these things happen sometimes but the hospital seemed disorganised and did not tell why the clinic had been cancelled, was it not possible to tell people sooner?
