"Post-op daily dressing changes"

Post-op daily change of dressings. As the doctors surgery didn't have appointments available my husband was advised to go to the walk-in centre.

First 2 days he was seen by a lovely nurse. Third day another nurse was quite frosty and said he shouldn't be going there to have his dressings changed. He explained that the doctors couldn't fit him in and after they'd finished they told him to come back at 9am today. He explained that he was working and couldn't make that time but that he would come in after.

So today after a quick shower he went round there at 7pm. There was only one other person in there being seen. The frosty nurse was there, came out and saw him waiting, ignored him and made him wait. They clearly had the hump.

When she eventually saw him he told them that the packing had fallen out and that it was weeping and bleeding a little. The nurse said that they told him to come in at 9am and therefore wasn't going to dress it. He told them again that he couldn't make it this morning due to work and that the packing and dressing had just come out whilst showering and they still refused to attend to it.

The nurse was very rude and unhelpful and as he was leaving they said that next time he comes in he should shower first.... He'd literally just had a shower! I thought it was called a walk-in centre for that reason, just walk in and get seen, no appointment necessary.

So why did the nurse refuse his treatment. They know that the doctors aren't open at the weekend and that he would have to come back there to be seen. He is now at home very sore and very angry, and I have had to pile kitchen roll on his back stuck down with duct tape to stop it weeping everywhere until he can go back there tomorrow morning, and hopefully it will be the nice nurse on duty again.

I will be putting in an official complaint about them with the PALs office as soon as I find out their name. The nurse's lack of treatment and compassion is unacceptable, and to send someone away with an open hole in their back which is leaking is beyond belief.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. I am really sorry to read that your husband has not had a good experience at the Minor Injury Unit.

We will be ensuring in the future that patients are given timed appointments for dressings on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
