I was originally referred to the Consultant by my GP because of deteriorating hearing, particularly in my left ear. They instigated several tests, and finally organised an MRI scan of my head, to try to identify the cause. They identified it as a benign tumour, called Glomus Jugulare, even though they had never seen one before! They referred me to Salford Royal, who repeated the tests, plus an Endocrine evaluation, confirmed the diagnosis, and assessed my hearing discrimination as only 30%. They referred me on to Sheffield Hallamashire, when they did gamma knife surgery on the 4.5 x 2.8 cm tumour, which was a lot less frightening than it sounds. I had follow-up checks and scans in 2013, with no bad news, and have a repeat of this in September 2015, and expect the same outcome.
