About: Essex County Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Convenient location for Central Colchester - much more useful location than either the General Hosp or the Primary Care Centre (both in Turner Rd.) I hope the Trust keep this site and don't sell it off for housing. But I'm not that hopeful the way things in public service are going!

What could be improved

It's basically a very old building, which makes it interesting - but it's age means that some of the time you feel as if you're in a time machine!! (have you ever seen the film the Elephant Man? Some of Essex County is a bit like that Victorian hospital!! So money needs to be spent on the buildings, which include some great architecture and features (as well as some really scruffy add ons!). I do so hope we get a government that doesn't want to cut spending all the time and wants to spend millions more on hospital buildings. We need it and deserve it, in my view.

Anything else?

I have been a patient for quite a long time in outpatients Eye Clinic. It's a bit disappointing to have seen 10 different doctors over the months. Continuity of care could therefore be much better. A couple of the doctors have been a bit rushed and a bit 'short' with me - I think that they are seriously pressed for time and therefore try to limit consultations to a very few minutes. Often not long enough to really find out about how my long-term condition is coming along. My recommendation would be that each consultation needs simply to be longer with more time for joint exploration of issues between patient and doctor. This would make for better quality patient care.
