"All staff were kind and caring, ..."

About: Royal Papworth Hospital (Papworth Everard)

(as the patient),

What I liked

All staff were kind and caring, easy to speak to and very professional, I have no complaint with any aspect of my care. The duck pond and grounds are beautiful and peaceful and provided a pleasant environment to recuperate.

What could be improved

For a world leading hospital, I was quite surprised by the facilities on the ward. I spent just over a week on the Surgical Unit Ground Floor ward and found it to be incredibly tired and tatty in certain areas. This is not to say it was dirty, in fact I have never seen a ward so thoroughly cleaned. Clearly, an old hospital that has not moved with the times, the new modern hospital can not come soon enough.

I found the food to be quite poor, I was told it was brought in and reheated, this was clear from the moment it arrived on the plate, it was tasteless. On one occasion I asked for cold, boiled ham and mash potatoes, and ended up with a dollop of congealed potatoes and a single, thin, slice of ham that you would get from the cooked meats section of your local supermarket. I had to live off crisps and cereal bars that friends and family bought in and when I was fitter, ate mostly in the hospital restaurant. I realise hospital food is notorious for being poor but I have had experience of several hospitals and this was the worst by far.

Anything else?

Overall, a hospital with a community feeling. Almost a family feel, everyone cares and walks around with a smile on their face. I cannot fault any part of the medical and support staff and would full recommend it, just make sure a packed lunch is bought in for you every day!!
